Whiskey & Maple Glazed Bacon

Jump to Recipe

I'm not going to lie, the recipe is a bit over the top.  Adding whiskey AND sugar to the already delicious, salty, fatty bacon is not going to make your blood pressure sing songs of joy.  But, when eaten in moderation, this bacon the perfect treat.

The first time I had bacon as a stand-alone dish I was hesitant.  Bacon to me was always an add-on or topping, wouldn't it be a bit too greasy on its own? But, prompted by my sister, we ordered the candied bacon appetizer at Grillhouse by David Burke in Chicago. Let me tell you, it was freaking delicious!  This wasn't your typical crispy bacon served with a side of eggs, this was a 1/2 inch thick slab of melt-in-your mouth deliciousness.  nom nom nom nom.

Ever since that meal I have been wanting to try my own hand at making candied bacon.  I've found the key ingredient to success is having thick-sliced bacon - most of the time you will need to get this from the butcher. You need the bacon to be thick because you are cooking it much longer than you normally would to enable all the flavours to seep in and for the sugar to caramelize. A thin piece of bacon would just crisp up and burn.  And with that, I will leave you with your whiskey and your bacon!

Ingredients
  • 1 lb thick cut, peppered bacon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whiskey
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Directions
  • Step 1 Preheat oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a rack on top.
  • Step 2 Mix maple syrup, brown sugar, whiskey and cayenne pepper in a small sauce pan and place on medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for around 5 minutes, or until the glaze is thick enough to cover the back of a spoon. Remove from heat.
  • Step 3 Place your bacon strips in your glaze and toss to cover. Lay in a flat layer on your baking rack. Coat with any remaining glaze.
  • Step 4 Place into the top rack of the oven and cook for 17-20 minutes. Take out and flip over each piece of bacon. Return to the oven for another 17-20 minutes, or until the bacon has become browned and crispy.
  • Step 5 5. Best served warm!

  • Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.

Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t mind me
asking what theme you’re using? (and don’t mind if I steal it?

    :P)

I just launched my site –also built in wordpress like yours– but the
theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.

In case you have a minute, you can find it by searching for “royal cbd” on Google
(would appreciate any feedback) – it’s still in the works.

Keep up the good work– and hope you all take care of yourself during the coronavirus scare!

    • Hi Justin,

Glad you like the layout of my site. The theme I use is Kale Pro, I love it! I picked it as it has a special recipe builder tool, although not sure if you would need that on your CBD site (which looks nice!). I didn’t find that the site took any time to load and the imagery was great. Keep up the good work!

Staying safe here at home, hope you are doing well during all this as well!
