The Ultimate Bloody Mary

Jump to Recipe

I don't know about you, but my ultimate hangover go-to is a Bloody Mary.  There is something about the blessed combination of acidity, salt, spice and vodka that immediately makes my morning better.

I didn't start drinking Bloody Mary's until about two years ago, and only because I accidentally ordered a Bloody Maria (sub vodka for tequila) hungover in a mexican restaurant one morning in Singapore.  When the drink arrived I was a little grumpy, but too hungover to care, I starting drinking it anyways. And voila!  My life changed.

This recipe is great for a Sunday brunch with friends, as it makes more sense to prepare multiple drinks at once given the number of ingredients involved.  Alternatively, you can make the tomato mix ahead of time (sans vodka) and keep in the fridge - it will stay fresh for 2-3 days.  Then, just add in the vodka with a quick stir when you're in the mood and sip away!

If I am feeling lazy, I simply garnish my Bloody Mary's with a piece of celery, some olives and salt.  But, if I am in an ambitious food, I get creative and add a few pieces of bacon and cooked shrimp.  You could also add a hard boiled egg, chicken wing, mini burger, etc - the list is endless.  The photo on the right is from a classic brunch spot in Sydney... the drink is a meal in itself!

Regardless though of how you garnish your drink, the recipe below will satisfy any tastebud (hungover or not!)

  • FOR SERVING
  • Plenty of ice
  • Salt (for glass rim)
  • Celery stalks (with leaves)
  • Olives
  • 4 lemon wedges
Directions
  • Step 1 Place tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, celery seed, garlic, hot sauce and pepper into a blender. Blend until smooth. You can also use a stick mixer if you do not have a blender.
  • Step 2 Mix vodka into the tomato juice mix
  • Step 3 To edge your glasses with salt, run a lemon wedge around the outside rim. Pour salt onto a small plate and roll the wet edge of the glass across the salt at a 45-degree angle. Repeat with the remaining glasses.
